Wharf Rat has always been a song that i wish they'd done in the studio. I'm a huge fan of WR but i have to admit that I prefer the earlier versions with big drum climax before "I'll get up and fly away". In later years Jerry just jumps right into that part without much bravado and plays the riff on guitar before singing it. Still good, but the older versions really explode.

As far as studio tracks not performed live, I always wondered about Terrapin. Seems like they spent a lot of time on the later half of the album version but hardly made any attmepts to play it live. I wonder if someone in the band said, well recording that was fine but i'm not dealing with all that on stage. Any revelations on that? e

Maybe they thought the Terrapin climax wouldn't work without the strings & choir they use on the album. I personally have never known what to make of the strings & choir on a Dead tune...

I was under the impression that that was the producer's idea and they, especially Mickey, were really pissed about the same.

remember Mickey saying his work (on tabla?) was deleted in preference for the cheesy orchestrations...too bad, cause i like the cymbal work during that section

not to mention the sugar coated vocals adorning Terrapin and Estimated a la Afternoon Delight (Starland Vocal Band)

sometimes putting it into the hands of the "professionals" isn't such a good idea

Oh, I had it confused with the definitive version of that tune:

Indeed. It's probably better that they never tried... :)
